Normatec Venom 2 review

The quick take
The Venom 2 Back combines heat and vibration massage in a lightweight, portable wrap designed for the lower back. It offers three heat levels and three vibration patterns, giving you plenty of combinations depending on whether you want a gentle warm-up or something a little more intensive after training.
For me, though, the real test isn't the specification sheet. It's whether something actually becomes part of my training and recovery routine. The Venom 2 Back has.
What is it?
The Venom 2 Back uses HyperHeat™ technology to provide consistent heat across the lower back, combined with vibration massage. It's cordless once charged, relatively lightweight at 1kg, and has a battery life of up to three hours.
You get three heat settings - 45°C, 50°C and 55°C - together with three vibration patterns. That means you can adjust both the heat and massage depending on how you're feeling and when you're using it.
What we liked
First, it's incredibly easy to use. Charge it, put it on and you're ready to go. There is no complicated set-up and, because it's portable, you don't have to sit in one particular place while using it.
The combination of three heat levels and three vibration settings is particularly useful. Sometimes I simply want heat; at other times I prefer the combination of heat and vibration.
It's also light enough that using it doesn't feel like another recovery 'session' you have to fit into your day. That's probably one of the reasons I've ended up using it so consistently.
When do I use it?
One of my favourite times to use the Venom 2 Back is first thing in the morning.
I'll often put it on while making breakfast before heading out for a bike session. I find the heat helps loosen up my lower back and gets me moving before training. I also use it after particularly hard training days or sessions.
In practice, I quite often use it twice a day - once in the morning and again in the evening.
Who is it for?
I think the Venom 2 Back makes particular sense for triathletes, cyclists and other endurance athletes who regularly experience tightness or stiffness through the lower back and like using heat or massage as part of their normal recovery routine.
It's also useful for athletes who enjoy massage but can't - or don't want to - head to a massage therapist every time they feel stiff after a hard training block.
What to consider
There isn't much of a learning curve here. The bigger danger is that once you've incorporated it into your routine, you may find yourself reaching for it rather frequently.
And while it obviously isn't a replacement for professional treatment when you actually need it, I've certainly found myself feeling less inclined to book a massage simply because my back feels a little stiff.
Final thoughts
The Venom 2 Back has genuinely become one of my most-used recovery products.
I've always had a tendency towards lower-back stiffness, particularly first thing in the morning. After around two months of regular and consistent use, I've noticed a considerable improvement in that morning stiffness. I feel looser and able to move more freely much sooner after getting up.
What I like most is its simplicity. There are plenty of recovery products that look impressive but end up sitting unused in a cupboard. This isn't one of them. I use mine regularly — often twice a day — because it's quick, convenient and fits easily around training and everyday life.
Sported verdict: A simple, highly usable piece of recovery kit that has earned a permanent place in my daily routine.
