Why We Love the Turbo: Indoor Training for Cyclists and Triathletes in Dubai

Introduction

Living in Dubai offers some incredible opportunities for endurance athletes. The UAE has invested heavily in cycling infrastructure, from the Al Qudra cycle track to DXBike, the riding loops through Mushrif Park, and the outstanding cycling facilities on Hudayriyat Island.

These venues have become regular training grounds for the UAE cycling and triathlon community.

But as every athlete in the region knows, training conditions here can also be challenging.

For much of the year the heat and humidity can make outdoor training difficult. During the peak summer months temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, and even early morning rides can feel demanding. There are also periods when dust, sand or poor air quality make outdoor training less appealing.

This is where indoor training becomes incredibly valuable.

At Sported, and within the Trisutto coaching philosophy, we often say:

"We love the turbo."

A turbo trainer is one of the most effective tools available to cyclists and triathletes - particularly for athletes living and training in the Middle East.

Turbo Training Works

Indoor cycling is sometimes seen as a compromise when outdoor riding is not possible.

In reality, turbo training can actually be one of the most effective ways to improve cycling fitness.

When riding outdoors, a surprising amount of time can be spent not pedalling - coasting, slowing, or adjusting effort based on terrain and conditions.

On the turbo trainer, however, you are almost always pedalling, meaning every minute contributes directly to the training stimulus.

Indoor training also removes many of the variables that can interrupt structured sessions outdoors.

Instead of reacting to terrain or wind, athletes can focus entirely on the workout and maintain consistent power and cadence throughout the interval.

Perfect for Training in the Dubai Climate

One of the biggest advantages of turbo training in the UAE is the ability to maintain consistent training throughout the year.

During the cooler months, riding outdoors in Dubai can be fantastic. Early mornings on the Al Qudra track or long rides on Hudayriyat are some of the highlights of the endurance calendar.

But during the summer months, training outdoors becomes significantly harder.

Extreme heat, humidity and dehydration can quickly turn a planned session into a survival exercise.

Indoor training removes these environmental stresses.

With a good fan and a structured workout, athletes can complete high-quality sessions without the impact of extreme heat or humidity.

For many athletes in the region, turbo training becomes an essential part of maintaining fitness during the summer.

Training Efficiency: A Core Trisutto Principle

One of the key principles in Trisutto coaching is training efficiency.

Most age-group athletes are balancing sport with busy professional lives and family commitments. Time is often the biggest constraint.

Outdoor rides in Dubai often require travelling to the cycling tracks at Al Qudra, DXBike, Mushrif Park or Hudayriyat, unloading the bike, completing the session, and then driving home again.

Before long, a one-hour ride can easily become a two-hour commitment.

With a turbo trainer the process is much simpler.

You can walk into the room, get on the bike, and start riding immediately.

For busy athletes this makes turbo sessions extremely valuable. A structured indoor session can deliver a high-quality workout in a relatively short period of time, and the time saved can often be spent where it matters most - with family.

Precision Training on the Turbo

Almost any outdoor cycling workout can be replicated on the turbo trainer.

In many cases it can actually be done more effectively indoors, because key variables such as cadence and resistance can be controlled precisely throughout the interval.

Out on the road or track it can be difficult to hold a specific cadence or power target because terrain and wind constantly change the effort.

On the turbo trainer, however, cadence and resistance can be maintained exactly.

This allows athletes to complete highly focused sessions designed to improve cycling strength, aerobic endurance, race-specific power and pedalling efficiency.

Workout: 20 × (1 Minute Big Gear / 1 Minute Easy)

Using ERG mode on your trainer, find a resistance that you can sustain for a maximum of one minute.

Ride hard for one minute, then take 60 seconds easy spinning before repeating.

Repeat this 20 times.

This session is excellent for developing leg strength, neuromuscular power and cycling resilience.

Progressive Strength Session

Total Time: 113 minutes

Warm Up:
10 minutes easy spinning.

Main Set:
1 × 10 minutes ALL OUT – race cadence (Rest 3 minutes)
2 × 5 minutes ALL OUT – cadence 76 (Rest 2 min 30 sec)
3 × 4 minutes ALL OUT – cadence 72 (Rest 2 minutes)
4 × 3 minutes ALL OUT – cadence 60 (Rest 1 min 30 sec)
5 × 2 minutes ALL OUT – cadence 50 (Rest 1 minute)
6 × 1 minute ALL OUT – cadence below 50 (Rest 30 seconds)

Cool Down:
15 minutes easy spinning.

This session progressively shifts the workload onto the muscular system by lowering cadence as the intervals shorten, building leg strength and muscular endurance.

Tips for a Great Indoor Training Setup

Cooling: Because there is no natural airflow indoors, a strong fan is essential.

Hydration: Indoor sessions can generate a lot of sweat, so it’s important to keep fluids within reach.

Protect Your Space: A training mat and towel help absorb sweat and protect floors.

Structure: Having a clear session plan makes turbo training far more productive and engaging.

Protecting Your Bike When Training Indoors

Because there is far less airflow indoors, sweat tends to accumulate on the bike during turbo sessions.

Over time sweat can be surprisingly corrosive and may lead to damage if it regularly drips onto components such as the headset, bolts, frame or drivetrain.

For athletes doing frequent turbo sessions - particularly during the Dubai summer - it’s important that bikes are correctly set up on the turbo trainer, protected with towels or sweat guards, and cleaned and serviced regularly.

At Vélo Presto we often see bikes that have spent months on a turbo trainer with sweat exposure but without regular maintenance. A simple service can prevent long-term damage and keep the bike running smoothly.

Final Thoughts

Dubai offers some fantastic riding environments during the cooler months. Cycle tracks such as Al Qudra, DXBike, Mushrif Park and Hudayriyat Island have become regular training venues for the UAE endurance community.

But for much of the year - particularly during the hot and humid summer months - indoor training becomes an extremely valuable tool.

Turbo sessions allow athletes to train with precision, efficiency and consistency.

At Sported we’re always happy to help athletes build an effective indoor training setup - and at Vélo Presto we can ensure your bike stays in perfect condition while you’re putting in the work on the turbo.
