The Benefits of Treadmill Running for Endurance Athletes
The Benefits of Treadmill Running for Endurance Athletes
For many runners, the treadmill has long had a reputation as the "dreadmill" - something you only use when the weather forces you indoors.
But many experienced endurance coaches see it very differently.
Many elite endurance coaches incorporate treadmill running into their programmes because it can be a highly effective tool for improving running efficiency, pacing discipline, and overall running economy.
As a Trisutto coach, I often incorporate treadmill sessions into run training programmes because they allow athletes to execute structured sessions with a level of precision that is difficult to achieve outdoors.
When the pace is set on a treadmill, the athlete must hold it. There is no slowing slightly when the effort becomes uncomfortable and no interruptions from terrain, traffic lights, or changes in gradient. The result is often a more disciplined and effective training session.
For endurance athletes training in Dubai and the wider UAE, the treadmill becomes even more valuable.
With summer temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C, combined with humidity and periods of poor air quality, indoor running can often be the safest and most effective way to maintain consistent training throughout the year.
Rather than being a compromise, treadmill training can actually deliver higher quality sessions than outdoor running in many situations.

Precision and Discipline in Training
Many elite endurance coaches incorporate treadmill running into their programmes because it helps athletes develop consistent pacing and disciplined execution of key sessions.
Many runners believe they are holding a steady pace outdoors, but in reality pace often fluctuates due to terrain, wind, fatigue, and interruptions such as crossings or changes in gradient.
The treadmill removes these variables.
Once the speed is set, the athlete must hold the pace for the duration of the interval. This encourages better pacing discipline and helps runners develop a more efficient rhythm.
Many athletes discover that maintaining a steady pace on a treadmill can actually feel harder than running outdoors, precisely because the treadmill forces consistency.
Over time, this type of controlled training helps athletes develop a stronger sense of pacing and improved running efficiency.
Improving Cadence and Running Efficiency
Another benefit often highlighted by coaches is that treadmill running naturally encourages better cadence.
Because the belt moves beneath the runner, it promotes a slightly quicker turnover and a shorter stride. This can reduce the tendency many runners have to overstride, which is a common cause of inefficiency and injury.
For triathletes in particular, this is important. After cycling, a shorter stride and higher cadence is often a much more sustainable running style.
Over time, treadmill sessions can help athletes develop a smoother and more economical running rhythm.
Time Efficient Training for Busy Athletes
For many athletes balancing training with professional and family commitments, time efficiency is critical.
Driving to a running location, warming up, completing the session, and travelling home can turn a one-hour run into a two-hour commitment.
With treadmill training, the session can begin within minutes.
This allows athletes to perform high-quality structured sessions while still managing busy work and family schedules.

Consistency During the Dubai Summer
From May through September, outdoor running conditions in the UAE become extremely challenging.
Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, and humidity can make even easy running feel demanding.
The treadmill allows athletes to maintain consistent weekly mileage, structured interval sessions, and controlled effort levels without exposing themselves to excessive heat stress.
Many of the athletes I coach use treadmill sessions during the Dubai summer months to maintain consistent run training when outdoor conditions become extreme.

Using the Treadmill and Lever System to Return to Running After Injury
Another situation where treadmill training can be extremely valuable is during the return-to-run phase after injury.
Many runners returning from injury struggle with the transition from rehabilitation back to full running. The impact forces involved in outdoor running can make this process difficult to control.
This is where the combination of a treadmill and the Lever movement system can be particularly effective.
The Lever system focuses on restoring natural running mechanics and reducing stress on joints and soft tissue during movement. When used alongside treadmill running, athletes can gradually rebuild their running capacity in a controlled and repeatable environment.
The treadmill provides a predictable surface and steady pace, while Lever work helps athletes rebuild proper movement patterns, improve hip stability and control, and reduce inefficient running mechanics.
Together, this approach provides a structured pathway back to running while minimising the risk of re-injury.
The Jan Rehula Set
One of the best-known treadmill sessions used within the Trisutto coaching system is the Jan Rehula Set.
The workout was designed by Brett Sutton, but is named after Olympic triathlon medallist Jan Rehula, who used the session regularly in his training.
The session combines short incline efforts with sustained running at race pace, helping athletes develop strength, cadence, and controlled running mechanics.
Jan Rehula Treadmill Session
After a proper warm-up, complete the following sequence 6–8 times:
2 × (30 seconds at 2% incline / 30 seconds rest)
2 × (30 seconds at 4% incline / 30 seconds rest)
4 minutes at 0% incline at race pace
Focus on maintaining good running posture, steady cadence, and controlled breathing throughout the session.
The short incline efforts help recruit additional muscle groups and build strength, while the sustained effort at race pace encourages the athlete to settle into an efficient running rhythm.
Because the treadmill allows precise control of both speed and incline, the session can be executed exactly as intended, making it an excellent example of how indoor training can deliver high-quality structured run work.
Is Running on a Treadmill Good for You?
This is one of the most common questions runners ask.
The answer is yes - when used correctly, treadmill running can be one of the most effective ways to improve running performance.
Unlike outdoor running, the treadmill allows athletes to control pace, incline, duration of intervals, and recovery periods.
This makes it an excellent tool for structured sessions such as tempo runs, threshold intervals, and controlled endurance work.
For runners training in climates such as Dubai, treadmill sessions also allow consistent training when outdoor temperatures become extreme.
When used alongside outdoor running, treadmill training becomes a powerful tool for building strength, efficiency, and consistency.
Treadmill Training for Runners in Dubai
For endurance athletes living in Dubai, treadmill training is often less about convenience and more about training consistency.
During the summer months, temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, and humidity can make outdoor running extremely challenging.
The treadmill allows athletes to maintain their run training safely while still executing high-quality sessions such as tempo runs, threshold intervals, and controlled endurance work.
By combining treadmill training during the hotter months with outdoor running during the cooler season, athletes can maintain fitness and build strong run durability throughout the year.
For runners and triathletes training in the UAE, the treadmill is not simply a backup option - it is often a key part of a smart and sustainable training programme.
Final Thoughts
Treadmill running is often misunderstood.
Many runners still see it as a last resort - something to use only when the weather forces you indoors. In reality, when used correctly, it can be one of the most effective tools for improving running discipline, cadence, and pacing control.
Within structured coaching systems used in elite triathlon programmes, the treadmill is often used deliberately to deliver high-quality, controlled run sessions that are difficult to replicate outdoors.
For athletes training in Dubai and the wider UAE, it can be even more valuable. The combination of extreme summer heat, humidity, and busy lifestyles means treadmill sessions can play a crucial role in maintaining consistent training throughout the year.
Used alongside outdoor running, movement work such as Lever, and structured coaching, the treadmill becomes a powerful part of a well-rounded endurance training programme.
At Sported, we’re always happy to help athletes think about their training in a smarter way - whether that’s advice on structured sessions, returning to running after injury, or preparing for your next race.
