Track Cycling in the UAE: Velodrome Abu Dhabi to Elevate Performance on Al Hudayriyat Island

A Landmark in the Making: Velodrome Abu Dhabi

Later this year, Abu Dhabi is expected to unveil the region's first indoor velodrome on Hudayriyat Island. Velodrome Abu Dhabi is built to UCI Category 1 standard and will accommodate over 3,500 spectators, ushering in a new era for cycling in the Middle East.

The venue will also feature a unique 600-metre rooftop cycling track, offering riders and spectators panoramic views of the island and the Abu Dhabi skyline. This world-class facility is the centrepiece of a wider development that includes a broader 220 km network of Abu Dhabi cycling tracks, BMX parks, and green recreational areas. It marks a serious investment in cycling as both a sport and a lifestyle.

Just as Yas Marina Circuit elevated motorsport in the UAE, Velodrome Abu Dhabi aims to do the same for cycling. The UAE has already proven its elite credentials with UAE Team Emirates' Tour de France victories. The velodrome could inspire the next generation of pro riders, locally trained, globally competitive.

With this development, Abu Dhabi becomes the first Asian city to receive the UCI Bike City label, joining the ranks of Paris, Glasgow, and Copenhagen. The velodrome is expected to host local, regional, and international events, and will provide training grounds for a new generation of Emirati and resident cyclists.

What is Track Cycling?

Think of track cycling as the purest form of speed on two wheels. It happens inside a velodrome—a steeply banked oval designed for momentum, precision, and spectacle. Riders use fixed-gear bikes with no brakes, built for speed and control. There are no climbs, no wind, no external variables—just the rider, the rivals, and the raw physics of performance. Every pedal stroke counts. Every line matters. This is cycling stripped to its essence

Track Cycling Disciplines: Speed, Strategy, and Stamina

Track cycling is where raw wattage collides with tactical finesse. Each event demands something different, explosiveness, endurance, teamwork, and above all, precision. Here’s how the discipline breaks down:

Sprint Events: Fast, Fierce, and Tactical

  • Individual Sprint: Two riders. Three laps. A game of psychological chess that ends in an all-out drag race. Timing is everything.
  • Team Sprint: Three riders (men) or two (women) work in unison—each leading for a lap before peeling off. It’s a high-speed showcase of trust and timing.
  • Keirin: Drafting behind a derny motorbike, riders build speed until it pulls off. Then comes the chaos—a high-speed, bar-to-bar sprint to the line.
  • Time Trial (1km/500m): No pacing, no tactics—just you against the clock. Perfect execution over pure pain. A true test of anaerobic firepower.

Endurance Events: Precision Over Distance

  • Individual Pursuit: Two riders start opposite each other on the track—catch your rival or log the fastest time. A masterclass in pacing and pressure.
  • Team Pursuit: Four riders ride as one—rotating smoothly, conserving energy, executing perfect aero formation. The clock stops when the third rider crosses.
  • Scratch Race: It’s simple—mass start, first to finish wins. But with track speeds and tight packs, nothing is ever truly simple.
  • Points Race: Sprints every 10 laps. Accumulate points. Stay alert. Strategy matters as much as stamina.
  • Madison: Two-rider relay teams launch each other into the race via sling-shots. It’s fast, technical, and a spectacle of coordination.

The Omnium: The Ultimate All-Round Test

Track cycling’s answer to the decathlon. Four events, scratch, tempo, elimination, and points, all in one day. It rewards consistency, resilience, and versatility under pressure.

Track Cycling Around the World

Track cycling is a mainstay of the Olympic Games and UCI World Championships. Nations including Great Britain, Australia, the Netherlands, and Italy have turned velodromes into medal factories, mastering every watt, every line, every microsecond.

With the launch of Velodrome Abu Dhabi, the UAE is stepping into that arena, creating a destination for serious training, talent development, and top-tier competition.

Expect to see regional elites, rising juniors, and international teams all circling the same boards, right here in Abu Dhabi. For performance cyclists in the UAE, the pathway to the world stage just got a whole lot shorter.

How to Get Involved

Here's what to expect when the Abu Dhabi Velodrome opens:

  • Introductory sessions to learn the lines and feel the flow
  • Club racing and structured training blocks tailored to serious cyclists
  • Youth academies to build the next generation of racers
  • Elite development pathways aligned with UCI standards

For road cyclists and triathletes, the transition is seamless. Track cycling offers potent cross-training:

  • Dial in high-cadence pedal technique
  • Build explosive speed and control
  • Hone race-day decision-making under pressure

If you're already a road cyclist or triathlete, track cycling is a perfect complement to your endurance base, and a fresh arena to test your limits.

Training benefits

The velodrome is a precision lab for performance gains. In a controlled environment, every session is an opportunity to fine-tune the variables that matter most.

  • Explosive Speed Work: Short, high-intensity intervals on the track mirror the demands of race-day surges and sprint finishes, without external disruptions. Perfect for sharpening that elusive top-end power.
  • Flawless Pedal Technique: Fixed-gear bikes demand efficiency. Riding at consistently high cadence refines your pedal stroke, improves engagement across the full rotation, and builds lasting neuromuscular control.
  • Elite Tactical IQ: Events like the Individual Pursuit and Keirin push you to read competitors, hold your line, and time your efforts with surgical precision, skills that translate directly to road and triathlon races.
  • Motivated, Like-Minded Training: There’s no substitute for training alongside other competitive cyclists. It builds community, raises standards, and keeps the fire lit, session after session.

For UAE-based riders battling heat, traffic, and sand, the velodrome offers year-round consistency and structure, the foundation for real gains.
