Dubai 70.3 Race Day Strategy


The Swim

Given that there are no aid stations on the swim, how do you prepare and fuel for 1,900m of swimming which will take between 35 and 45 minutes for the average age grouper?

We recommend:

-> to drink 500ml of STEALTH Training Mix which is made up of slow release carbohydrates. As you are walking from transition to swim start, slowly drink 500ml which will give you 20g of carbohydrates for your fuel stores.

-> 5 minutes before your swim start, take one of the STEALTH Advanced Isotonic Gels. They come in 5 flavours and are easy to digest. Being pure isotonic you do not need any additional fluids to help digestion and they contain 22g of maltodextrin, sticky rice starch and fructose.
And off you go!


T1

T1 provides an opportunity to take on some nutrition and hydration before getting on the bike. Your mouth may feel a little salty from taking in some sea water but salt is an electrolyte and that’s good in small doses. Once you are out of your wetsuit you can grab a gel or a banana from your transition bag and eat that while you run to your bike. Pick something that is easy to digest and easy to get down.

We recommend:
-> a Real Fruit Gel, made from real fruit providing 22 grams of carbohydrates. 
Your nutrition strategy should be built around consuming 60-90g of carbohydrates per hour.



The Bike – GO BiG

Once you have got out of T1 and have settled into your race pace, the bike is probably the easiest part of the 70.3 to consume nutrition and hydration. Remember you need to be aiming for 60-90g of carbohydrates per hour either from gels/bars or fluids. There is an opportunity cost to carrying excessive weight on the bike so you need to optimize how effectively you carry your nutrition. If you can manage, it is better to be self- sufficient than risk picking up something untested from an aid station.

STEALTH BiG Endurance drink provides 200g of carbs per litre and it comes in 3 great flavours Watermelon, Pineapple and Peppermint.

Top that off with some isotonic gels and you are good to go.

Top Tips:
-> Best to test any products before race day.
-> Ensure your nutrition is firmly fixed to your bike so you don’t lose it when you hit the first speed bump.



T2

Hopefully race day will deliver a tail wind on the second half of the bike and you will have a super fast ride back into Dubai. Time to think about T2 and take on some extra carbohydrates before the run. Make sure your put your run nutrition in your transition bag.  T2 itself allows you to grab a gel or drink 500ml of hydration as per plan. Top tipsPlan your T2 and run nutrition.Greeper laces are the best laces on the planet.Don’t charge out of T2, settle into your race pace as quickly as you can.


The Run

This is probably the hardest part of the race to take on fuel when you are aiming for 60-90 grams of carbohydrate per hour. It needs to be easy to consume so we would recommend  the STEALTH advanced isotonic energy gels that do not require water to get them down. As you get deeper into the run it’s the time to start thinking about caffeine. Caffeine can give you an energy boost when the going gets tough or you find yourself in a dark place. Most aid stations will carry flat coke, make sure it’s the real thing, or switch to STEALTH caffeine gels which contain 75mg of caffeine. If you start taking caffeine too early, and not using your fat stores effectively you may run out of gas well before the finish line. 

Top tips

Don’t go out too hard on the run. Build into it.
STEALTH advanced isotonic gels are easy to consume and don’t require additional water to consume so you can take them when you need.
Caffeine can provide an energy boost in the latter part of the race. Take it.


Recovery

Don’t forget to add recovery nutrition to your preparation!
In the run up to Dubai 70.3 you are probably at the peak of your training program and putting in both long and tough sets. It is important to avoid injury and ensure adaptation from the training and proper recovery for your muscles.
